Vitalik Lays Out Ethereum's Five-Year World Computer Roadmap in Hong Kong


 Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin delivered a keynote at the 2026 Hong Kong Web3 Carnival on April 20 that went well beyond the usual conference talking points. The speech laid out a five-year technical plan with specific timelines, engineering tradeoffs, and a security philosophy that separates Ethereum's direction from nearly every other blockchain project currently competing for developer attention.

The headline takeaway for most observers was the "world computer" framing. Buterin described Ethereum as a public bulletin board and a shared computational layer, not a payments network. But the more important disclosures were technical. Current Ethereum signatures are 64 bytes. Quantum-resistant versions run up to 3,000 bytes and cost 200,000 Gas compared to 3,000 Gas today. That efficiency gap is real and the team is working on EVM vectorization to close it, using the same logic applied to AI hardware acceleration.

zkEVM is the near-term priority. It allows complex computations to be verified on-chain without every node re-executing the work. The plan is to start with a small share of network nodes using the zero-knowledge virtual machine this year, then scale that share until 2028 when full coverage is targeted. Combined with the Block Access List, gas repricing, and EIP-8141 for account abstraction, the protocol is moving toward a state where phones and IoT devices can independently verify chain state.

The finality target is 10 to 20 seconds, combining Bitcoin's longest-chain rule with Byzantine Fault Tolerance. Buterin said the network can tolerate up to 49% node failure under normal conditions and retains 33% security certainty under stress.

One line from the speech is worth holding onto for anyone building on Ethereum or holding ETH long term. Buterin said the chain must be something you can rely on even without a power outlet — the same principle Bitcoin was built around. A protocol that survives without any particular team maintaining it. That is the standard Ethereum is being engineered toward.
